Ali Abdaal's $400k Day

What’s next for his Part-Time YouTuber Academy?

Welcome, Wednesday readers. I’m happy to be in your inbox for a midweek pick-me-up. Speaking of—PewDiePie just announced that he and his wife Marzia are having a baby. To think we’ve watched him go from a teen playing horror games in 2010 to a soon-to-be dad...it’s surreal. How long ’til we see a YouTube nepo baby?

Ali Abdaal Makes $200k in 10 Minutes

On Monday, the education creator opened enrollment for his eighth Part-Time YouTuber Academy (PTYA) course, which will be the last class he hosts live.

The video Abdaal posted across platforms announcing the final course of its kind inspired fans to move quickly—Abdaal brought in $200,000 in sales in the first 10 minutes course enrollment was live. By the end of day one, sales had doubled to $400K.

Context: Abdaal has shared that PTYA makes up nearly one-third of his business income. It brought in over $1.7 million in revenue for 2022. The four-week course, which Abdaal has taught live since November 2020, teaches creators how to grow and scale their YouTube channels and starts at $1,495 per student.

Why is PTYA winding down its live component after this run? â€œBecause the live classes take up so much work and time—they are the biggest time drain on me and the rest of the team—we’ve decided to wind down the live component to focus on the other exciting things that are happening in life and the business as well,” Abdaal said in the course announcement video.

Big picture: Revamping PTYA is part of Abdaal’s larger goal to shift his YouTube channel to a “lifestyle business.” Abdaal has been open about his ambition to focus more on work/life balance and less on growth and scale.

3 Creator Stats to Know Today

YouTube TV / Rafael Henrique

1. YouTube now tops all other platforms for streaming watch time on connected TVs. That means it’s surpassed Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu in watch time, according to a Nielsen report.

2. Only 180,000 people in the U.S. have a Twitter Blue subscription, according to The Information. That’s less than 0.2% of the website's monthly active users. FYI, about 62% of Twitter’s paying users reportedly reside in the U.S.

3. TikTok’s average daily use among kids climbed to 107 minutes a day in 2022, making it the most-used app among those under 18, according to parental software company Qustodio. That means young users spend 60% more time watching videos on TikTok than they do on YouTube (67 minutes/day on average).

What's the Deal with De-Influencing?

TikTok

Over the last two weeks, the TikTok hashtag #deinfluencing has 5x’d in views to over 114 million.

What is de-influencing? Instead of recommending products to purchase (like the newest Fenty bronzer or Amazon pantry organizer), creators like Basic of Course and Dara Levitan are encouraging viewers to buy less by telling them what they don’t need.

We're curious—what do you think of the de-influencing trend? Hit reply and let us know.
