The Future of YouTube Explainers Is Here ▶️

Former Vox journalist Christophe Haubursin partners with Johnny and Iz Harris

Good morning. Nate here—popping in to mention that this is my last edition of The Publish Press. It’s been an incredible ride, and I’m honored to have played a small role in Publish’s growth these last two years.

I ranked some of my favorite stories I’ve worked on down below. But before that, I want to thank all the talented people who ensure we can press publish three times a week, including…

  • My wonderful co-writer, Hannah

  • The other two members of the #editorialsquad, Kinsey Grant and Moy Zhong

  • Colin and Samir, for setting the tone and vision for the newsletter

  • Josh Kaplan, Jenny Rothenberg, Ali Ben-Levi, and the other behind-the-scenes operating wizards

And you, The Publish Press readers, for joining this community and tagging along for each send. 🙌🏻

P.S. Enjoy the long holiday weekend! We’ll be back on Monday.

How This Creator Launched a New Channel with Johnny Harris

Former Vox video journalist Christophe Haubursin investigates his and his viewer’s obsessions in Tunnel Vision / Christophe

Former Vox video journalist Christophe Haubursin just launched his own YouTube explainer channel, Tunnel Vision, exploring topics like Bitcoin WhatsApp groups and the future of fast fashion. Here’s how the new channel came to life →

“The way I’ve been thinking about it is sort of taking the explainer format and turning it upside down,” Haubursin told us. “I’m going into a story not knowing anything, take it one piece at a time, show my sources, show how I learned every step of the way, and in doing so be super transparent about the whole process.”

Tunnel Vision’s process is different off-camera too. Haubursin is operating the channel in partnership with video journalists Johnny and Iz Harris’s media production company, NewPress.

  • NewPress owns the channel, with Haubursin working as a salaried employee and leading the editorial direction. Haubursin will also receive a rev share that scales with Tunnel Vision’s success.

  • Haubursin joins Search Party creator Sam Ellis as part of the NewPress network, supported by a team of producers, editors, animators, and business operators with access to Johnny and Iz for editorial feedback.

Why it works: Haubursin can focus on his reporting strengths, while NewPress builds out a journalistic network and finds new ways to reach viewers.

“I feel like we’re an answer to a new problem, which is people 1) want to learn visually 2) they want to do that in a relatable way with a relatable person and 3) they feel like news and news information hasn’t been widely accessible to everyone, and it hasn’t been written for everyone,” Iz told us.

Looking ahead: With Johnny Harris, Search Party, and now Tunnel Vision, NewPress is working toward a new business model for creator-led journalism.

“I think it’s huge for people to sense there’s a person behind the thing they’re watching, and not just a shapeless entity,” Haubursin said. “Jumping into a new world of independence, there’s a whole new community for [creators] here as well, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Creator Roundup: Thanksgiving Edition

Food creators (left to right) Meredith Hayden, Andrew Rea, and Alison Roman prep for Thanksgiving / Wishbone KitchenBabish Culinary UniverseAlison Roman

It’s Thanksgiving here in the US, and food creators are prepping accordingly. What’s on the menu this year →

Wishbone Kitchen creator Meredith Hayden shared a high-production package: a longform cooking vlog and a two-part recipe newsletter for her paid Substack subscribers.

  • The key to a successful Turkey Day, according to Hayden?

  • “Lots and lots of planning…space out your grocery shopping, I like to get the dry goods and the pantry items earlier in the week, and then start trickling in the produce,” Hayden said in the video.

Babish Culinary Universe creator Andrew Rea ran through the top 10 most common Thanksgiving dinner mistakes.

  • For example, Rea thinks it’s easy to lose track of the moving parts—like ensuring the turkey is defrosted a day early.

  • One quick fix: making an hour-by-hour schedule to ensure no course gets left behind.

Alison Roman shared a “Thanksgiving Special” series focused on doing more while doing less. For her, that means throwing a smaller dinner so that she can spend more time cooking special courses—and less time playing host.

How One Video Can Change Your Life

This creator recently released a video that blew up, reaching 2.5 million views—and he’s now a full-time creator.

His secret? 1of10.

While browsing the outliers database on 1of10, he came across a video that had reached 18 million views. Brandon studied the psychology behind why the original video went viral and recreated the concept in his own unique way by innovating the "airless" idea into "airless bike." He also drew inspiration from Ryan Trahan's thumbnail to develop his own unique perspective.

By leveraging the viral idea he discovered on 1of10, Brandon transformed his channel from getting just a few thousand views to an incredible 2.5 million views—and you can too.

Find your next viral video idea for 70% off by using the code "CS24." Available this week only.

Nate’s Favorite Publish Stories of All Time

That’s a wrap for Nate 🥲 ✍️ 🎬️ / Photography by Jesse Leon

There’s a lot of creator news curation that goes into writing each edition of The Publish Press. Still, who knew that curating your own stories would be this difficult?

But the show must go on. Here are my top five favorite stories →

5. Creators on Creators: Cleo Abram x Johnny Harris. It was a privilege to host (and sit in on) this conversation between two of the brightest video journalists there are.

4. The Quiet Battle for the Soul of YouTube. Over the last several years, an upstart group of young creators started the #YouTubeNewWave—a movement I had a chance to document at Creator Camp ’23.

3. Inside Nebula, the Creator-Owned Streaming Service. Around the studio, everyone always jokes that I’m the guy they call on to explain what Nebula is. Luckily, the startup’s CEO, Dave Wiskus, helped do it for me here.

2. Unpacking #PatientsNotPatents with John Green. I spoke with the veteran creator and bestselling author shortly after his campaign to fight Big Pharma took over Twitter—and accomplished its goal.

1. The Year Creators Went Hollywood. I interviewed over a dozen creators and insiders during a pivotal year for the film industry, exploring the past, present, and future of Hollywood’s collision course with YouTube.

Thanks again for reading along these last two years! And if you ever want to chat about something I wrote, feel free to shoot me a DM.
