Is This Event VidCon for STEM Creators?

What do a walking table, a fish that can drive, and Hank Green have in common? They were all at the third year of Open Sauce, engineering YouTuber William Osman’s STEM creator convention this weekend.

The details on Open Sauce: Over 6,000 fans gathered in San Mateo, California, as vendors and creators showed off their inventions, participated in panels, and held meet and greets.Β

  • Open Sauce featured a roster of 130+ creators at the eventβ€”including Pokimane, VSauce, and JerryRigEverything.Β

  • Sponsors included YouTube and Fujifilm, plus creator-led companies like Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs and Alan Becker.

Osman’s team also streamed all panels and exhibits through Open Sauce’s paid subscription platform, Sauce+.

What creators are saying:

  • β€œAs a creator, it’s very difficult to have a subjective view of your impact on your audience,” STEM creator Morley Kert told our team. β€œMeeting all the fansβ€”I met a lot of kids today inspired to build stuffβ€”is pretty awesome.”

  • Game development creator PolyMars++ was inspired by other creators who prioritize passion > views. β€œAt other events, you’re learning how to hack the algorithm,” he said. β€œ[Being at Open Sauce] makes me want to look back at my content and think about β€˜what parts of this do I have the most fun doing and how do I lean into that more?”’

  • β€œIt is more organized in every way,” comedy creator Hassan Khadair told us. β€œβ€˜This has been the best creator event in years’ is a constant sentence I’ve heard all weekend.”

Zoom out: VidCon is in transition under new ownership, Cannes Lions is geared toward industry insiders, and other big events like Creator Clash are being canceledβ€”making Open Sauce something of a breath of fresh air in today’s creator event circuit. As the internet becomes more stratified by genre and content type, niche-specific events like this one could be positioned to succeed.

Why Jimmy Darts Launched an Electrolyte Brand

Jimmy Darts launches electrolyte powder Overflo in partnership with non-profit Charity: Water / Photography courtesy of Overflo

Philanthropy creator Jimmy Darts has built an audience of 24 million by giving money to strangers in need. Now, he’s starting a new business to scale faster.Β

The result: Overflo, an electrolyte powder created in partnership with non-profit Charity: Water that provides 30 days of clean water to a family of six for every bag sold.

Quick context: In the past year alone, Darts has raised over $2 million through his videosβ€”helping people cover rent, medical bills, and more. He’s now GoFundMe’s all-time top organizer for fundraisers started for other people (excluding non-profits).

Why electrolytes? Darts wanted a brand that could scale beyond his likeness and still align with his audience’s values. β€œI don’t want to be known for a productβ€”I want to be known for change,” Darts told us.Β

He’s targeting millennial women and moms (his largest demos) and plans to compete with Liquid I.V. on price. FYI: The global electrolyte powder market was worth $8.4 billion last year and is projected to more than double by 2024.

β€œIf we can put pressure on these [electrolyte] companies to give more to [clean water charities] to solve this problem, then it can be solved in our lifetime,” Darts said.

Big picture: Like MrBeast’s Feastables and Ryan Trahan’s Joyride, Darts’s Overflo is a CPG brand with a motiveβ€”to build a business that sustains his philanthropic impact and creator career.

β€œLaunching this brand allows me to be more independent as a creator. If the brand deal market dries up in 15 years, through my videos and the company I started I can stay doing this ’til I’m 80 and really have an impact,” Darts said.

Instagram Partners with Google Search

Google will now index all public Instagram posts to appear in search results / Illustration by Moy Zhong

Those IG Reels of the best protein popcorn are headed for Google’s search results. Last week, Instagram began notifying users that Google will index all public Instagram posts and videosβ€”so creators’ Instagram content will now appear on Google search results.

Worth noting: Google has reportedly indexed Instagram posts for a while, but the platform is now starting to do so at a higher rate and across more regions.

Between the lines: With Open AI and Perplexity reportedly working on browser platforms and TikTok gaining search traffic, Google is looking for ways to retain its search platform dominance…and creators might be the solution.
