Are Video Podcasts the Future?

Spotify and YouTube create hybrid content

Good morning. TikTok has flown creators to Capitol Hill to vouch for the platform as CEO Shou Zi Chew prepares to dissuade Congress from further targeting TikTok in testimony tomorrow. The creators-turned-lobbyists are reportedly holding a press conference today—we’re keeping an eye on D.C. and we’ll have more Friday.

Call Her Daddy Doubles Down on Spotify Video

Alex Cooper / Lifestyle

Last week, the Spotify-exclusive show Call Her Daddy released a video podcast titled “The Pilot for My Reality Show: Italy Edition.” The hour-long vlog, which takes viewers behind the scenes with host Alexandra Cooper as she attends Milan fashion week, is the latest in Spotify’s efforts to solidify itself as a multimedia platform.

Context: Spotify has been investing heavily in video—including a vertical video feed designed to improve discovery, short-form video for artists, and platform-exclusive video podcasts from creators like Emma Chamberlain, Markiplier, and Julia Fox.

The audio/video hybrid is big right now: YouTube recently added a suite of new features in its Studio hub that allow creators to more seamlessly publish and grow their podcasts—think better performance metrics and easier ways to start new shows or revamp existing content.

Podcast creators have found that uploading video increases their growth potential. Andrea Raquelle, producer for The Sarah Fraser Show, told Digiday, “Without video, we hit a plateau; we couldn’t get past 10,000 [downloads]. When we started doing a video recording, we saw the best growth. It took two months to get to 35,000 downloads."

News Roundup: Streamers Become Multi-Hyphenates

Kai Cenat / YouTube

  1. Streamers → documentarians. In the last two weeks, Twitch streamers xQc and Kai Cenat both released documentary-style videos on YouTube. Cenat’s video, which detailed the subathon that helped him break the record for Twitch subscribers, has racked up 1.7 million views in under a week. xQc’s Day in the Life video has earned widespread praise in the YouTube comments section for its high-production-value documentary style, a departure from the streamer’s usual content.

  2. Streamers → game developers. Gaming streamers Sacriel and Shroud are working with developer Splash Damage to design an open-world survival game being billed as a “game that streamers and gamers love playing.” The streamers have built robust audiences breaking down the mechanics of popular games, and they’ll provide Splash Damage with fan and creator POVs.

  3. Streamers → writers. Streamer Stephen Flavall, known as “jorbs” on Twitch, is releasing a book detailing his experience building a career as a streamer. The book debuts May 23.

How This Tiny House YouTuber Scales His Business

George Dunnett’s YouTube channel explores the fascinating world of tiny homes. When it comes to his creative process, Dunnett maintains a small operation—but doesn’t do it alone. He’s part of the Fiverr influencer program, where he earns income and Fiverr credits when he showcases the brand in his content.

To put together one of his latest videos, "I Paid a Stranger $10 to Redesign My Tiny House," he put his Fiverr credits to work by hiring sellers to help with the mood boarding, 3D design elements, and virtual staging needed to produce his video.

Working with Fiverr has been a brilliant experience! [The] generous Fiverr credit allowance for each sponsored video and bonuses for customer acquisitions mean that you get supported during the creation of your video and rewarded beyond your upfront fee. All in all, it’s a partnership that I highly recommend for creators looking for new ways to monetize their content,” George said of the partnership.

  • The initial field of 63 will be hand-picked by Good Good, with the 12 winners from the first day moving on to a content shoot and 36-hole main event.

  • It’ll transpire over four days in Scottsdale, Arizona.
